Obituary for Astra Urjanis Kidd

Dr. Astra Urjanis Kidd of Riga, Latvia, and Elizabethtown, Kentucky, age 82, passed away June 19, 2017 at Richmond Place Rehab & Health Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

Astra and her parents fell under Nazi occupation during World War II in Latvia. Her father was conscripted as a physician to administer to German soldiers. The family was liberated by an African-American soldier who was himself lost in gunfire just an hour later. Astra's family immigrated through Canada and sponsored into the United States by then Berea College President Hutchins. Astra attended Berea Programs. She attended Columbia University in New York City, reciting poetry and reading in cafés in Greenwich Village for meals and the fun of it. She returned to graduate from the University of Louisville School of Medicine, going on to obtain a Master's Degree in public health from University of Michigan. Astra was the first female physician in Hardin County, Kentucky and a leader in the Hardin County Health Department for many years. She was hesitant to enter her first board meeting at Hardin Memorial Hospital when Dr. Robert Taylor spoke to her, took her by the elbow in the hallway, and said, 'Come on, let's go.' Thereafter, a fond friend forever. Astra was an only child, predeceased by her parents, Dr. and Mrs. Anna Urjanis. Astra became bosom friends and roommates throughout college at Berea College with Dorothy Sue Van Horn Wharton, now of Lexington, Kentucky, and her daughter and Astra's goddaughter, Dr. Robin Wharton, who specializes in equine acupuncture and veterinary medicine in Lexington, Kentucky. Astra remembers and supports the American Latvian Association.
